Improving health through research

Secure Data Environments are being set up to securely store, analyze and protect NHS data so that it can be effectively used in research which improves patient care and develops new innovations to keep us healthier.

The East Midlands is one of 11 regional Secure Data Environments which together make up a national Network across England:

  • East Midlands
  • East of England
  • Great Western
  • Kent, Medway and Sussex
  • London
  • North East and North Cumbria
  • North West
  • Thames Valley and Surrey
  • Wessex
  • West Midlands
  • Yorkshire and Humber

Each SDE brings together the expertise of local front-line NHS staff, data scientists, technology providers, researchers and, through our communities, patients and the public.

There is also a Secure Data Environment for England managed by NHS England.

Once the SDE Network is complete, it will provide a direct route for approved research projects to work with NHS data to accellerate life-changing and life-saving research which will improve future NHS care.
